One drowns in bid for spill ship footage
A tragedy struck salvage operations on Wed-nesday when a fisherman in a boat carrying media personnel fell into the sea. The Indian Coast Guard had to deploy a helicopter to rescue a youth who had gone missing, but could not find his body till late in the evening. The Indian Coast Guard issued an advisory to the media not to venture into the sea.
Dhanraj Rathod, 20, a fisherman joined the crew of a private news channel at around 11 am, when they were on their way to the MSC Chitra to take video footage of the ship. “There were a total of seven persons on the boat. While the crew was taking footage and photos, the boat lost balance due to the rough waves and Rathod fell into the sea. We coordinated with the Coast Guard who sent in a helicopter to rescue Rathod but he could not be traced,” said Kaiser Khalid, DCP port zone.
“The salvers M/s SMIT International, Singapore has mobilised the barge, equipment and manpower near MSC Chitra and has started securing the falling containers. So far, around 10 to 15 containers have been secured. In view of the relatively rough position of the sea near the site, the attempt to stabilise the ship and the pumping of oil has not been started yet,” said the spokesperson for the Directorate-General of Shipping. The ship owner has told DG Shipping that 200 containers out of 512 were empty. “The Navy survey ship INS Yamuna is surveying the channel. So far only three containers have been identified,” said the spokesperson.
