'Onion to be cheaper by March'
Rajkot: Skyrocketing onion prices are expected to come down by March in Gujarat and other parts of the country in view of bumper crop expected in the Saurashtra region, traders said today.
The prices in most of the cities in the state were ruling at Rs 85 per kg for the last few days, but declined to Rs 60 a kg after the Union Government banned its export.
A member of the Saurashtra Onion Association, Vinubhai Ghatiya, said unseasonal rains had affected onion production in the country.
However, prices of the commodity may come down to as low as Rs seven per kg by March when the fresh arrivals are expected, he said.
Gujarat is one of the leading producers of onion in the country and most of the stock comes from Saurashtra. It is expected that Saurashtra alone would produce around two crore tonnes of onion and 'we can say that it would be available in the market at Rs 7 per kg' in little over three months from now, Ghatiya said.
