Opp demands probe into Games
Alleging diversion of funds meant for SC/ST to Commonwealth Games projects, BSP on Tuesday disrupted Parliament proceedings.
The Left parties and the BJP also alleged that there was “bungling” in organising the sporting event. In Rajya Sabha, BSP members demanded that a parliamentary committee should probe into the matter. In Lok Sabha, BSP members staged a walk out on the issue.
As soon as the Rajya Sabha met in the morning, BSP MPs were up on their feet demanding discussion on the issue. House chairman Dr Hamid Ansari asked them to allow Congress MP, Mr Birendra Singh to take oath and let House to pay obituary to former member Maruti Dnyanoo Mane.
Soon after, BSP MPs along with Left members started demanded discussion on the issue. Amidst chaos, Dr Ansari adjourned the House for 10 minutes. When the House met, BSP leader Satish Chandra Mishra said he has given a notice for suspension of Question Hour to discuss the issue. He was supported by Left parties and members of BJP who too wanted a discussion. Chairman Dr Hamid Ansari asked members not to disrupt the Question Hour and take up the issue through a call attention notice.
“This is incorrect,” Dr Ansari said before adjourning the House for 10 minutes. When the House reassembled, similar scenes were witnessed. The unrelenting Opposition members wanted the chairman to fix a time for the debate. The House was again adjourned till noon.
When the House met, leader of the Opposition Mr Arun Jaitley said it was a very important issue and the government should take instructions from the Chair on replying to the concerns.
CPI(M) member Sitaram Yechuri said the Left parties want discussion on the issue this week itself.
Minister of state for parliamentary affairs Prithviraj Chavan said the Opposition parties should give a calling attention notice and the government will reply. Amidst din, the House was adjourned till 2 pm.
When the House met at 2 PM, the issue was discussed under Short Duration where BSP member Mr Satish Chandra Mishra demanded that a Parliamentary committee should be set up to probe the allegations of fund diversion. Alleging that the Congress government was “anti-dalit’’, he said: “There is 2.4 million SC population in Delhi. Instead of providing civic infrastructure and other facilities for them, it was spent on a 14-day event. This is shameful.”
Congress member Mr Janardan Dwivedi requested the government to come out with a response while taking a dig at the BSP saying there should be a separate debate on who has done what for the dalits.
Mr Chavan agreed that the matter was serious and he would ascertain the facts from the Delhi Government and report back to the House.
