Opposition to ensure stir success
To ensure the Bharat bandh’s success, Opposition party leaders on Sunday fanned out into different parts of the country.
Among the 17 parties supporting Monday’s Bharat bandh are the Shiv Sena, Samajwadi Party, JD(U), CPI(M), CPI, Forward Bloc, RSP, AIADMK, PMK, MDMK, TDP, BJD, JD(S), AGP, Akali Dal and the INLD. The RJD-LJP combine have, in the meantime, called a Bihar bandh on July 10 while the Mayawati-led BSP will stage protests across the country on July 6 against the fuel price hike.
However, in an interesting development, Tripura’s ruling CPI(M)-led Left Front will not join the nationwide shutdown. However, CPI(M) politburo member Brinda Karat said: “There is no confusion. They have already had a general strike. They will have mass picketing on July 5.” On the bandh’s eve on Sunday, NDA leaders met to give a final shape to the bandh while the Left parties issued an appeal to the people to join the strike and ensure its success. The CPI(M) politburo issued a statement upon the conclusion of its two-day meeting on Sunday to say that the recent oil price deregulation is meant to help private oil companies and put the people at the mercy of a market-controlled by oil MNCs and the domestic corporates. The NDA has stated that Monday’s bandh would mark the beginning of a series of protests across the county in the run-up to the Parliament session slated to begin from July 26 with an assertion: “sadak se sansad tak (from street to Parliament).”
