Opposition warns of trouble if sidelined
New Delhi, July 25: With both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha expected to be adjourned immediately after obituary references over the death of sitting members, the Opposition is likely to press for an adjournment motion on the price rise issue on Tuesday morning.
The government has already refused to roll back the increase in fuel prices, and in the last session the parties led by Mr Lalu Prasad and Mr Mulayam Sing as well as Ms Mayawati had helped the government defeat cut motions on this issue.
The Lok Sabha Speaker, Ms Meira Kumar, said after a meeting with all floor leaders on Sunday that all parties had promised to cooperate in the smooth running of the House.
But with the government in no mood to accept the Opposition’s demands, a confrontation between the two sides is expected.
The Leader of the Opposition, Ms Sushma Swaraj, in a veiled warning, said on Sunday that there wouldn’t be any disturbances if the government heeded their demands. She claimed that the UPA parties like the DMK and Trinamul Congress also wanted a discussion on the price rise issue.
The government might feel the heat from the BJP and the Left parties on the nuclear liability bill, but Congress managers claim that the support of the Samajwadi Party, BSP and RJD could see the bill through.
The Indo-Pak talks, illegal mining issue, situation in Jammu and Kashmir are among the main issues which will raised by parties during the session.
The Bhopal Gas tragedy issue is also expected to generate heat during the month-long session with the BJP planning to seek a discussion under a rule that entails voting. Ms Swaraj said the party would demand annulment of the agreement reached with the Union Carbide under which “paltry” relief was given to the affected people.
