Order on fixed DGP tenure soon
Justice K.T. Thomas committee appointed by the Supreme Court go into the issue of fixed tenure to state police DGPs in the light of top court’s order on the police reforms is expected to submit its report soon.
This was disclosed by a bench of Justices Aftab Alam and R.M. Lodha while hearing the case of former Maharahstra and Punjab DGP S.S. Virk, alleging that he was deprived of the fixed tenure benefit as recommended by the apex court in its 2006 judgment. However, the bench dismissed Mr Virk’s petition, saying even the court is thinking of reconsidering its direction the fixed minimum tenure of two years to DGPs in view some practical problems faced by the states.
The bench pointed out that both Central and state governments had sought clarification from the court on this aspect and in view of this a three-member committee under Justice Thomas was asked to go into the entire matter. Senior counsel Rakesh Dwivedi said his petition was not aimed at prolonging the tenure of his client.
