Our land in adverse Bangla possession coming back: Gogoi
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday hit out at Opposition parties for their "campaign against the recent Indo-Bangladesh land swap agreement."
Countering the opposition to the land deal, Gogoi accused the Asom Gana Parishad, BJP and All Assam Students Union of being "rather pro-Bangladesh by opposing the return of Assam's land as agreed in the land swap deal."
"Our land in adverse possession of Bangladesh is coming back to us and they don't want it! They want the area should instead remain in possession of Bangladesh," Gogoi told a Congress rally here.
"The AGP, BJP and AASU have woken up now when the agreement has been signed to reclaim our land. Did they ever make any proposal for getting back our land?" he asked.
The chief minister clarified Bangladesh would receive 357 acres of Assam's land, while the state would reclaim 1,240 acres from Bangladesh under the land deal.
"The Opposition parties and some organisations have started a smear campaign and are misleading the people of the state on the Indo-Bangladesh land swap deal even though it will benefit Assam more than Bangladesh," Gogoi reiterated.
Discounting the Opposition's accusation of him being 'anti-Assamese,' Gogoi claimed, "I am pro-Assamese/Bengali/ Hindi-speaking/tribal/Hindu/Muslim/Christian and Buddhist people. I work for the welfare of all."
