Over 1/3rd posts of teachers lie vacant
In a shocking revelation, Union human resource development ministry has found that more than one-third of the teachers’ posts at different levels are vacant in several Central universities.
Official sources stated that the fact emerged after a recent survey conducted by the ministry regarding the employment of teachers in Central universities. Amongst the universities that have been found lacking are prestigious universities like Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University, Aligarh Muslim University, Benaras Hindu University, Jamia Millia Islamia, Allahabad University, Ambedkar University and Hyderabad University.
The HRD ministry had sought the details from 24 Central universities which had revealed such shocking data. The data, till July 31 this year, revealed that there were a total 13,120 posts in these universities and 8,701 faculty had been appointed against these posts, leaving over 4,400 posts vacant in these universities.
Sources stated that the shortage of teachers in various central universities was a direct result of bureaucratic delays in the appointment process and a lack of appropriate candidates for the vacancies.
While the data has revealed that over one third of teachers posts are lying vacant in central universities, officials sources said that the state of affairs in state universities was even worse.
Sources stated that the shortage of adequate faculty in these universities could adversely affect its attempts at increasing the gross enrolment ratio in higher education from the present 12.4 per cent to 30 per cent by 2020. Interestingly, the HRD ministry had last month established a four member committee to look into ways to attract more youngsters to the teaching profession. The decision was taken today at a higher education round table meeting. The committee has been mandated to look into more incentives for teachers and research fellows to help target bright students towards the profession.
