Pak: both sides considering siachen pullout
Pakistan defence minister Syed Naveed Qamar said on Sunday that Pakistan and India were considering to withdraw troops from Siachen.
“Negotiation between Pakistan and India is in progress for the withdrawal of troops from Siachen and very soon a better strategy will be formulated in this direction,” he said.
Talking to reporters in Tando Mohammad Khan, Mr Qamar said that Siachen possessed a unique status of world’s highest border having no population in the area.
Defence secretary-level deliberations were recently held in Islamabad and it is hoped that both the countries will succeed in formulating a comprehensive strategy for withdrawal of troops from the area, he added.
Meanwhile, officials said, Indo-Pak talks on Sir Creek issue would start on Monday in New Delhi.
The Pakistani delegation had to face some problems at the Lahore airport on Saturday when their Delhi-bound flight, PK-207, was cancelled due to technical reasons. The delegation had to stay for a night at Lahore. The nominated Pakistani high commissioner to India, Salman Bashir, had to travel by the same flight but now he would leave for India on June 20. Officials said Pakistan and India are resolved to find an “amicable settlement” to the Sir Creek issue.
