Panel to probe Ilavarasan death
Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday named Justice S.R. Singaravelu, retired judge of the Madras high court, as the one-man commission to probe the death of Dalit youth Ilavarasan who allegedly committed suicide last week in Dharmapuri by throwing himself in front of a speeding train, a day after his upper caste wife disowned him.
“There have been varied views expressed by social activists, political parties and others on the death of Ilavarasan, which has evoked shock and grief. He had married out of caste. His father too has expressed doubts about the death. Hence, to find the truth behind Ilavarasan’s death, I have instituted an inquiry commission under Justice S R. Singaravelu,” the CM said in a statement.
“Peace was restored in the area through strenuous efforts by the police and quick relief measures from the district administration. The case has been transferred to CB-CID”, she said while detailing the Rs 10 crore rehab works underway in the region, including green houses and drinking water for 99 Dalit families affected by caste violence.
