Paperwork will cost India $85m
India will shell out about $85 million for “repair technical documentation” and about $29 million for “services to Indian specialists” as part of the overall US$2.3 billion for acquisition of the Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier from Russia but defence sources on Wednesday justified the costs.
Confirming these figures, defence sources in New Delhi, however, said, “There is a huge amount of documentation required and being transferred for operation and maintenance of the carrier. So far as the services to Indian specialists is concerned, this is the cost that the Russians have incurred while paying for the accommodation and transportation of Indian naval personnel who were in Russia for the Gorshkov’s refitting project.”
India currently has only one aircraft carrier in operation. It is acquiring the Gorshkov as its second aircraft carrier and is also building an indigenous aircraft carrier that will serve as its third aircraft carrier.
A report of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) last year had criticised the acquisition of the Admiral Gorshkov.
