Parliament rocked over graft charges
The issue of corruption, including that of 2-G scam, Adarsh Society controversy and Commonwealth Games (CWG) on Wednesday rocked both the Houses of Parliament.
As soon as the two Houses met for the day, Opposition members led by the BJP did not allow the Question Hour by trooping into the well raising slogans, leading to adjournment till noon.
When both the Houses met again at noon, the situation was no different, as Opposition members resumed their slogan shouting leading to their adjournment for the day. They were demanding removal of telecom minister A. Raja and an enquiry by a Joint Parliamentary Committee into the CWG scam.
In the Rajya Sabha, Leader of the Opposition Arun Jaitley said: “Since the last session of Parliament, there have been unprecedented rise in cases of corruption in high places that have come to notice.”
He also referred the alleged scam in allocation of 2G spectrum to new telecom companies, reports of corruption in the CWG 2010 and irregularities in Adarsh Housing society. “The Government, instead of dealing with the issue, has belittled them as inner party issues,” he added. Questioning the role of Mr Raja in the telecom scam, AIADMK leader V. Maitreyan said, he had a copy of the CAG report on the 2G spectrum allocation and displayed it. Chairman Hamid Ansari urged members not to raise slogans. He said some of the subjects, raised by the Leader of the Opposition, have already been included in the list of business for discussion during the current session.
The Opposition parties adopted the same strategy in the Lok Sabha and stalled proceedings by storming the well. The AIADMK members demanded removal of Mr Raja as telecom minister, while BJP leaders led their party members in castigating the government on the alleged scams.
When the Lok Sabha re-assembled at noon, the protests were joined by members of Shiv Sena, JD(U) and SP.
