Pawar signals pre-poll Cong tieup
The NCP has decided to go for a pre-poll alliance with the Congress in Maharashtra for the coming general election. Party president Sharad Pawar has even asked party leaders to take the Congress along with them in election preparedness.
The NCP had called for meetings on Saturday to discuss the political situation in the 22 Lok Sabha seats in the state it contested in the last general election. Mr Pawar personally reviewed each seat along with senior leaders. The meetings went on for more than eight hours.
According to sources, Mr Pawar told party leaders that the party was to go with the Congress in the Lok Sabha election so they should take help from the Congress and vice-versa wherever needed. He even asked senior leaders to set aside their differences.
The Union minister is believed to have told his leaders that if mobilisation of the grassroots were done, the NCP would be able to face any wave.
Confirming the move, NCP state unit president Madhukar Pichad on Saturday said, “The party has decided to go for general election in alliance with the Congress party. Everything depends on the Finance Bill, which is to be passed in the Lok Sabha next week. If it cannot be passed, then elections might be announced at any point of time.”
Mr Pichad added, “The current political situation indicates that elections might be advanced so we have started preparations for all 22 seats. There was no discussion on the names of possible candidates or exchange of seats.”
