PC admits serious disturbances after July 19

The return of turmoil to the Kashmir Valley found the Lok Sabha not only expressing concern on Monday morning and the government forced to admit that in recent weeks, the “problem has taken a serious turn” after July 30.

Responding to the concern expressed by MPs from various parties over the prevailing situation in Jammu and Kashmir, Union home minister P. Chidambaram said while there had been a lull after July 19 in the “sensitive state”, after July 30 there have been “serious disturbances”. He also assured the House that he would be making a statement before it on Monday or as early as possible.
Earlier, the issue was raised during Zero Hour by BJP parliamentary party chairman L.K. Advani who called upon the government to tell the House about the situation in the state and what steps are being taken to set it right. Noting that the state is engulfed in hinsa (violence) and arajakta (anarchy), Mr Advani asked that the home minister tell the House about what is happening in the state.
JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav too noted that the situation in the state is serious and that the entire country was concerned about it. Mr Yadav also asked the government, “How can we help?” H added, “We also have a lot of contacts with people in J&K and you can take our help.” Offering to make some prayas (effort) towards restoring peace in the state, the JD(U) leader further said that the government should take the help of all those who can help it.
The CPI(M)’s Basudeb Acharia described the situation in the state as “grave” and said that the people of the state are feeling a sense of “deep alienation”. The CPI(M) MP suggested that a parliamentary delegation visit the state to “find out the feelings of the state’s people and also assuage them”.
Mr Acharia further said that no steps have been taken so far to contain the current situation in the state or to resolve it. Calling for the need for a dialogue by both the Central and the state government, Mr Acharia said that the state’s people have lost all faith in the government.
