PC downplays Qureshi remark on Saeed

Prodding Pakistan to act against terror operatives in that country, home minister P. Chidambaram on Wednesday downplayed the statement made by Pakistan foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi that it was difficult for his country to rein in elements like LeT founder Hafiz Saeed.

“Substantive discussions on security related matters and on post-26/11 matters were held between me and the interior minister of Pakistan. I made a courtesy call on the foreign minister of Pakistan. So I would rather wait for the outcomes of my meeting with the interior minister of Pakistan on Hafiz Saeed and on other issues that I had raised with him when we both met privately and at delegation level,” Mr Chidambaram said.
Mr Chidambaram, who met Mr Malik on the sidelines of the Saarc Home Ministers Conference in Islamabad, has pressed for action against Hafiz Saeed, the alleged mastermind of 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai.
On the Bhopal Gas tragedy case, the home minister said:”Who is liable is a matter to be decided by facts and applying relevant laws.” Responding to questions on Dow’s liability in the case, he said: “Liability in Bhopal gas leak case can only be fixed by court of law.” Explaining that stand of the reconstituted Group of Ministers on the Bhopal gas leak disaster, the home minister said: “An application was filed in 2005. It is still pending. I cannot comment now on why it is pending but the group headed by me has recommended that the government and the ministry concerned must pursue that application vigorously and ask the court to decide that matter quickly. It is only when a court of law decides the liability on Dow or on any other successors....”
Five meetings of the Group of Ministers (GoM) on the Bhopal gas leak disaster were held between June 18-21, 2010 and the report was submitted to the Prime Minister on June 21, 2010. “Subsequently, the Cabinet approved the recommendations of the GoM. I am confident that the recommendations will be implemented in accordance with the timeline approved by the Cabinet,” the home minister said.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
