PC is heckled over 2G issue
Union home minister P. Chidambaram was heckled by BJP, Shiv Sena and AIADMK members in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday during Question Hour. The issue also led to a brief adjournment of the House. The main opposition BJP has been boycotting Mr Chidambaram in Parliament for his alleged involvement in the 2G spectrum allocation scam. The party has also asked for his resignation, accusing him of “conflict of interest” by “misusing his office” to help a former client.
As soon as Mr Chidambaram rose to reply to supplementaries on a question on fire safety norms, BJP members started shouting slogans against him and later trooped into the well of the House. These members were demanding the home minister’s resignation for allegedly helping a former client.
The scene continued when another question on human trafficking was asked and Mr Chidambaram started replying. BJP members again trooped into the well of the House shouting “Chidambaram isteefa do (Chidambaram tender your resignation )”. Soon, AIADMK and Shiv Sena members also joined the sloganeering against the Home minister.
But when BJP members tried to attack the UPA chairperson while heckling the home minister, members from the treasury benches also stormed into the well attacking the BJP for disrupting the proceedings. Amidst the ruckus, chairman Hamid Ansari was forced to adjourn the House for about 15 minutes towards the fag end of Question Hour.
The BJP had moved a privilege motion against Mr Chidambaram on Tuesday for making a statement outside Parliament on the accusation of helping a client. The party had also disrupted Parliament proceedings over this issue last week.
