Union home minister P. Chidambaram on Tuesday said the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has made certain breakthrough in the Samjhauta Express blast case of 2007 in which 68 people lost their lives.
Talking to reporters, Mr Chidambaram said, “There is some progress in the case and the NIA, which is probing the blast, has made certain breakthrough”. He, however, refused to elaborate further, saying it “can’t be disclosed to you”.
According to sources, the NIA is currently interrogating Swami Aseemanand, key accused in Ajmer Dargah and Mecca Masjid blast cases, in connection with Samjhauta Express blast case. The CBI recently arrested Aseemanand from Haridwar in connection with its probe into Mecca Masjid blast case.
Sources in the Central agency said Aseemanand has reportedly provided certain vital clues to the probe agency in connection with Samjhauta blast case also. The anti-terrorist squad of Rajasthan will also question Aseemanand in connection with Ajmer blast case.
The Central probe agencies, including NIA, are suspecting the role of right wing outfits in 2008 Modasa (Gujarat) blast case also.
According to sources, a team of senior officials of the Central agencies recently visited Sabri Dham, Saputara, in Dang district of Gujarat, where ashram of Aseemanand is located, to ascertain his role in Modasa blast. Two persons were killed and eight others were injured in the blast that occurred on September 29, 2008, in Modasa.
