PC remark is very unfortunate: Modi
Union home minister P. Chidambaram’s statement linking rising crime in Delhi with migrants evoked sharp reactions from leaders of both the ruling and Opposition parties in Bihar as well as the state’s intelligentsia on Monday. The controversy also set the stage for a reopening of the politically sensitive issue of migration in Bihar.
Although chief minister Nitish Kumar of the JD(U) refrained from making any comments on Mr Chidambaram’s controversial remarks, deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi of the BJP described the blaming of rising crime on migrants as “very unfortunate”.
Several leaders of the ruling JD(U) and BJP and those of the Opposition RJD and LJP came out in condemning Mr Chidambaram’s comments in strong words.
“If there is a rise in crime in Delhi, it is the duty and responsibility of the Delhi police to control it. As the national capital, Delhi is free for people from all over the country to come and work there. The Union home minister’s remarks are very unfortunate,” said Mr Modi. Senior JD(U) leader and minister Shyam Razak said Mr Chidambaram’s remarks were “childish mischief”.
RJD Rajya Sabha MP Ramkripal Yadav demanded that Mr Chidambaram must apologise in public because his words were “ridicule for the poor”. RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav said in Delhi that Mr Chidambaram spoke of migrants in order to hide the inefficiency of the national capital’s police and reminded the media of a similar controversial comment in the past by Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit. Bihar saw a flurry of political statements criticising his logic because migration remains a politically hot topic in Bihar.
