PCC chief rules out leadership change

Assam Congress president Bhuwneswar Kalita here on Monday ruled out the possibility of change in leadership in the state while threatening to take stern action against Assam Youth Congress president Pijush Hazarika for his remarks against a minister in public.

Asserting that there was no scope of indiscipline in the party, Mr Kalita told reporters that if MLA Pijush Hazarika who is also the president of youth wing of the party had any grievances against the government, he had every right to draw the attention of the leaders but within the party forum. “His remarks in public forum was a case of indiscipline,” said Mr Kalita pointing out that Assam Congress has formulated a set of strategies, including strengthening its block committees and local media cells, to streamline its campaign in the run up to 2013 panchayat polls in Assam.
Mr Kalita informed that executive committee meetings of all district committees have been completed and those of block committees would be over soon.
“Next we intend to finish up such meetings at the gram panchayat level by May 31. In the last panchayat polls, the Congress secured around 77 per cent of the seats in Assam and three successive victories in assembly polls have shown that people have accepted us,” said Mr Kalita.
He said, “The meetings are intended to build our strategy for the panchayat polls and we are also building up a campaign to make the voters aware about various social and economic projects taken up by both the central and state governments, like the MNREGA.” There are 20 zila parishads, 188 anchalik panchayats and over 2,200 gaon panchayats in Assam, which will go to poll in 2013.
Congress party is planning to organise a state-wide Panchayat Sammelan in Guwahati by end of this year to draw the final game plan for the polls. “Besides, we also seek to strengthen our media cells at local level and have more interaction and exchange of view with the mass media,” Mr Kalita said.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
