Penalties for acid attack to get harsher
The government has decided to amend the law to provide for harsher punishment in case of acid attacks — with a jail term of at least 10 years — following an increase in such attacks on women.
A high-powered committee headed by Union home secretary G.K. Pillai, which was set up to suggest changes in rape laws, is all set to propose two new clauses — 326A and 326B — in the Indian Penal Code to specifically deal with acid attacks. And while almost all acid attacks are on women, it is noteworthy that the new clauses will be gender neutral. The committee is also suggesting a fine of upto `10 lakhs, which it says should be paid directly to the victim. The guilty should be punished even if nobody gets hurt in the attack, the panel says.
