People mandate with UPA on JPC: Cong

Toughening further its stand of rejecting the Opposition demand for a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe into the alleged 2G scam, the Congress on Tuesday said, the people’s mandate is with the UPA and so those, who are asking for the JPC, cannot force their demand on the government.
Talking to reporters at the regular party briefing, AICC spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed said, “People have given mandate to the UPA to run the government. If they (Opposition) have anything to say, they should speak in Parliament. They have the right to raise people’s issues and problems. But they do not have the mandate to force the government to do what they want. The people have not given the mandate to the Opposition for it.”
Noting that the current impasse in Parliament over the Opposition’s demand for a JPC probe into alleged 2G scam “unfortunate”, Mr Ahmed said, “Government’s stand is the party’s stand. We have tried to take the Opposition into confidence but unfortunately it did not happen.” The standoff in Parliament continued for the eighth day with the Opposition creating pandemonium in both the Houses, leading to their adjournment.
The AICC spokesperson also claimed that the behaviour of the Opposition in Parliament was “irresponsible”. He said, “The government has made it clear that there is a Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and it is a constitutional provision that the CAG report will go to the PAC. So how come the government will ignore constitutional provisions. First let the CAG report go to the PAC then let it be examined by it.”

Nov. 23: The CPI(M) is speaking in two voices on the demand for a JPC probe into the 2G spectrum scam. While the major Left party has joined chorus with the BJP in Parliament on the demand for a JPC probe into the alleged scam, senior party leaders outside Parliament are questioning the BJP’s demand for a JPC probe accusing it of adopting ‘’double standards’’.
