Plan to snatch Kanchan from custody revealed
In a sensational revelation, the police has come to know that the rebels had planned to snatch CPI(Maoist) state secretary Sudip Chongdar alias Kanchan from the captivity of the Special Task Force (STF) of the Kolkata police. Kanchan was arrested by the STF in Kolkata on December 4.
The Maoist plot came to light after the police and security agencies interrogated Umakanta Bera, a wanted Maoist leader of Jangalmahal and his two associates — Subhas Budhuk and Anuklul Bera — throughout Saturday night.
On Saturday evening, the three were detained by the police from Sealdah which is considered as the heart of the city.
Initially, the investigating officers were clueless about the purpose of their presence in the city. But a marathon grilling of Umakanta bore fruit as he revealed the plot to his interrogators, sources disclosed.
Umakanta told the police that besides him and the other two held members, some more action squad rebels were scheduled to come to the city and a group was to be formed to carry out the operation on December 14 at the Bankshal court, highly placed sources revealed.
