Play recalls sacrifice by poets
With the nation remembering Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary, a group of artists commemorated a four-century-old incident of staging “Dharna Satyagarh” by poets in the princely state of Marwar. One hundred and eighty-five poets sacrificed their lives while protesting against the state.
The artists staged a play called Satyagarh at different places to salute the poets. “The incident happened in 1643 of Vikrma Samvant (1,586 AD) at Auwa under Pali district, where the poets staged a sit-in.
“But when the then Raja, Uday Singh, refused to listen them, the 185 poets took their lives by stabbing themselves,” says the ex-president of state heritage protection council, Onkar Singh Lakahwat.
According to Lakhawat, the poets supported the late king Maldev’s elder son, Chandarsen, to step in his late father’s shoes to become king.
But his younger brother Uday Singh became the king with the help of Emperor Akbar.
