PM celebrates quiet 78th b’day
The celebrations, in keeping with the personality of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, were quiet. So the PM ushered in his 78th birthday in his own quiet way, minus any loud celebrations.
But it’s something not unexpected given the PM’s soft spoken demeanour. Among those who wished the PM on his birthday and sent him flowers were President Pratibha Patil, vice-president Hamid Ansari, Congress president and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi.
Greetings also came his way from a wide ranging political spectrum. BSP leader and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati telephoned Dr Singh.
Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj, Tamil Nadu chief Minister M.Karunanidhi, Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi were also among those who greeted the PM who will be over 80 by the time he demits office.
In 2009, the PM had celebrated his birthday mid-air as he was returning from the G-20 summit in Pittsburgh in the US.
The economist turned politician, who has held several prestigious posts in his distinguished career, is also credited with India’s economic liberalisation along with the then Prime Minister, P.V. Narasimha Rao. Dr Singh was the finance minister in Mr Rao’s Cabinet.
