PM hails success of PPP model
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday hailed the “success of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model” and lavished praise — along with UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi — on the new integrated Terminal-3 of the New Delhi IGI airport which was inaugurated by both the leaders. The T-3, one of the ten largest airport terminal
buildings in the world, becomes operational from July 14. Mrs Gandhi called the T-3 a “fantastic facility” and described it as a “most impressive structure”. The New Delhi IGI airport is being developed by the GMR group-led DIAL, which confirmed that over Rs 12,000 crore had been spent so far overall on the modernisation of the IGI airport, including new airport terminal buildings and the third runway.
“We are all very happy and indeed very proud of the completion of our one of the world’s largest airport terminals in a record time of 37 months. This airport terminal establishes new global bench marks. It also exemplifies our country’s resolve to bridge and bridge fast enough the infrastructure deficit in our country. It proves the success of the Public Private Partnership model in execution of large infrastructure projects,” Prime Minister Singh said. “Our government had launched a modernisation and capacity expansion programme for major airports some years back. Today, we see one of the successes of that creative initiative,” he added. The Prime Minister said he was hopeful that the New Delhi IGI airport would shortly rank as one of the 10 best airports in the world.
In her speech, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi said that with the inauguration of the new terminal, “We (India) are right up there with the best”. But she pointed out that the success of the Delhi Metro proved “how the public sector can be galvanised”. She said “quality should be part and parcel of all public sector projects.”
Mrs Gandhi said that air travel had become more affordable and airport terminals across the country should be easily accessed by the elderly as well as persons with reduced mobility.
