PMK left with few choices for ’14
With former Union health minister Anbumani Ramadoss of the PMK having been chargesheeted in a medical college case, Tamil Nadu MPs cutting across party lines assert the broad contours of an alliance in the state for the 2014 General Elections have emerged. The consensual opinion is that the PMK now has no choice but to fight the elections in the company of the Congress.
It is to be noted that the PMK broke ranks with the Congress much to the chagrin of the Congress during the 2009 elections and went along with the AIADMK. It is a different matter that the PMK drew a blank in that poll despite contesting in seven constituencies. It once again jumped on to the DMK led bandwagon in 2011 Assembly polls but could win only in three seats out of the 30 it contested.
MPs from Tamil Nadu feel that with this (chargesheet) development, the PMK has been boxed into the Congress camp and that it is sweet revenge for the grand old party which pleaded with the former Union health minister not to abandon the UPA. The senior Ramadoss-led party is known for deserting one alliance for another in every election-be it for the Assembly or the Lok Sabha.
Anbumani Ramadoss has been chargesheeted by the CBI in a Delhi court for allegedly allowing an Indore-based Medical College to proceed with the admissions inspite of not having the requisite faculty and clinical materials. Apart from the PMK leader, nine others including two top government officials and two senior doctors of a leading hospital too have been indicted. According to the chargesheet, Anbumani Ramadoss and others conspired to allow the college to go ahead with the admissions for the second year.
