PoK polls only for local govt: Expats
A group of Kashmiri expatriates from both halves of the divided state living in Britain has cautioned that the upcoming elections in PoK are meant only to elect a local government and will have no bearing on the political status of the territory or the state of J&K as a whole.
One of the speakers at a recently held representative meeting of various Kashmiri political and social organisations in Birmingham which discussed the Kashmir situation currently affecting the life and liberties of the people on both sides of LoC and the role of Kashmiri Diaspora even saw joining the fray by various Pakistani political parties as “forced”.
A statement received here said that the meeting among other issues discussed the decision of the mainstream political parties in Pakistan to take part in local elections and the manner in which it would impact the local politics which was “principally subject to the provisional role of the AJK government and the responsibilities of the government of Pakistan under UNCIP resolutions.”
Syed Nazir Gilani who heads a human rights group said the UN resolutions on Kashmir have cautioned the J&K Assembly in Srinagar that the “area from which this Assembly is elected is only part of the whole territory of J&K”.
