Police constable held for raping minor in Bengal
On a day when chief minister Mamata Banerjee assured a three-member delegation of the National Commission for Women (NCW) that all complaints of rape were being impartially investigated by her government, a police constable was arrested for allegedly raping a nine-year-old girl in Bankura Town.
The constable, Chandan Mudi, was arrested from his house at Rabindra Sarani area in Bankura following a complaint lodged by the girl’s father.
Mudi was beaten up and injured by locals before being handed over to the police. The constable has been suspended and an investigation launched.
Meanwhile, after the meeting with the chief minister at Writers’ Buildings on Monday, NCW member secretary Anita Agnihotri said: “We have discussed everything in a congenial atmosphere and we are satisfied. The chief minister has assured us that impartial investigation is being carried out in every rape case in the state.” The NCW had earlier sought a report from the state government after getting concerned over the growing complaints of rape cases. “The government has said there could be comments here and there. But this is not going to affect the course of investigation in any manner which I think is very reassuring,” Ms Agnihotri said. Asked to comment on the chief minister’s remark on the recent Park Street rape case which she had said was fabricated, Ms Agnihotri said: “I can’t comment on this but I can say that we have discussed everything.” She also mentioned that the NCW was concerned about the general situation in the country.
