A speeding Mercedes-Benz belonging to a politician rammed into a taxi near Africa Avenue early Thursday morning, killing a woman passenger and injuring the driver.
The two Mercedes occupants, including a former political leader’s son, fled, leaving the two injured in the taxi bleeding to death. The police said the incident took place around 3.30 am on Church Road in the R.K. Puram area.
The politician’s son was arrested late on Thursday night.
Sources said the Mercedes sports convertible was owned by a South Delhi businessman who unsuccessfully contested the Delhi Assembly elections. The politician reportedly said his driver had been behind the wheel and his son next to him when the car rammed into an Ambassador taxi.
The deceased woman is yet to be identified, while the driver was identified as a 33-year-old resident of Kangra in Himachal Pradesh.
A passerby called the police control room at around 3.35 am to say two mangled cars were lying on the road.
The police said the taxi took a right turn on the Africa Avenue T-point when the speeding Mercedes, coming from Outer Ring Road, rammed it.
The injured were rushed to Safdarjung Hospital, where the woman soon succumbed.
The driver, who was discharged after first-aid, was taken to the R.K. Puram police station for the recording of his statement, but this could not be done till late Thursday evening as he was still heavily sedated.
