Poll violence much controlled in Bengal
At a time when the CPI(M) and the home ministry are trading charges over violent incidents and state of governance in West Bengal, latest figures of poll violence in the Marxist bastion show that violent incidents have been reigned in the state during the election process.
But the figures contradict the claims made by the CPI(M) of killings of its cadres, with home ministry figures showing that at least 24 people, half of them belonging to the Trinamul Congress, have been killed in different incidents of poll violence in West Bengal ever since the election process began last month.
So far, 24 people have been killed in the state during the election process. These consist of 12 Trinamul supporters and five CPI(M) supporters and rest of the victims belonging to other political parties, official sources said.
West Bengal is having six-phased elections — April 18, 23, 27, May 3, 7 and 10 — for the 294-member Assembly. Apart from the entire force of the West Bengal police, around 70,000 Central Paramilitary Force personnel are being deployed during the election process.
