Polls last chance to save TN: Jaya
Claiming that Tamil Nadu was in the grip of “anti-social elements”, AIADMK supremo J. Jayalalithaa on Sunday said the Assembly elections was the “last chance” for the people of the state to save it.
Addressing a campaign meeting in Ambasamudram constituency, Ms Jayalalithaa said “power cut, uncontrolled price-rise, rice and sand smuggling, rise of rowdy elements, bogus lottery tickets and illicit liquor sale” are rampant in the DMK government.
If the “golden opportunity” presented by this election “to overthrow the DMK government is missed, we may never retrieve the state,” she said.
Later addressing a campaign meeting in Madurai, the AIADMK chief said, “No other scam has shaken the country so strongly as the 2G spectrum scandal. This has happened even as Kalanidhi Maran and Dayanidhi Maran family is being declared among the richest in the world. And Tamil Nadu is reeling under a debt of `1 lakh crore,” she alleged.
She assured that if elected to power, Madurai would “once again emerge as a peaceful temple and tourist town.” Flyovers would be built at junctions where there was congestion and drinking water problem shall be solved, she said.
Ms Jayalalithaa also assured that rowdy elements would be brought under control if the AIADMK-led front was elected.
The AIADMK supremo said the officials had taken the “right step” when they withdrew the security at the residence of Union minister and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunadhi’s son M.K. Alagiri.
She wondered why Mr Karunanidhi, who had slammed the move, was “making a fuss about the issue”. Security was restored at Mr Alagiri’s residence following objections from DMK and the minister himself. — PTI
