Pollution board officials inspect Edappally canal
Kochi: Even as over 100 families near the Edappally canal seethe with anger over the foul smell emanating from it, with the colour of the water turning black, Pollution Control Board authorities on Monday visited the gravely affected areas near Edappally railway over bridge, Chembokkadau, Mankuzhi Nagar and Vattekkunnam Indiraji bridge.
The three-member team comprised PCB senior environmental engineer Farook Sait, environmental engineer K G Sajeev and assistant engineer Shahina. The team also made an extensive survey of the area near Lulu Mall and collected samples from different places from 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm.
Edappally native Aboobacker said that the smell was severe on account of the stagnant state of the canal. “The canal turned black only recently and the reason should be investigated. Mosquitoes too have gone up manifold,” he said.
The PCB team members said that the issue was grave and deserved immediate attention. The samples have been sent to Ernakulam central laboratory for tests. Farooq Sait said the stench was caused by the mounds of waste which clogged the canal.
