Power cuts make for sleepless nights
Chennai: Summer’s heat and humidity are being exacerbated by unscheduled power cuts and voltage fluctuations in various parts of the city which are giving Chennaiites sleepless nights over the last five days, this usually occurring between 10 pm and 1 am.
The residents of parts of Surendra Nagar in Adambakkam, Thillai Ganga Nagar in Nanganallur, Ram Nagar in Madipakkam, Kodambakkam, Velacherry, Virugambakkam and Perambur have had unannounced power cuts at least for 30 minutes every night. “It disturbs the sleep. Even if they cut power for four hours in the morning, it wouldn’t matter. But with children and elderly people at home, it is difficult, when TNEB cuts power during the night,” said S. Ramesh from Zackriah Colony, Kodambakkam.
Magesh of Ram Nagar said that severe voltage fluctuations in their area had affected the functioning of the air conditioner and the fans too, and now there unannounced power cuts to boot.
The extent of the problems that consumers face at night is reflected in the calls received by the Tangedco’s 24-hour complaint redressal centre, number 155333. The centre from 9 pm to 2 am received 800 to 1000 calls per hour. Most of the calls were made from Kodambakkam, KK Nagar, Nanganallur and Velacherry in South Chennai, and Perambur, Kolathur, Vysarpadi, and Sembium in North Chennai.
A senior Tangedco official said that unscheduled power cuts had been imposed at night in Kodambakkam, Virugambakkam and Velachery for the last few days due to a fault in the 110 KV line between Guindy and Velacherry substations. “The fault has been rectified and normal power supply will be restored from tonight,” the official said.
