Power cuts test patience in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Power utilities continued their bad form by imposing sudden outages on the city, despite cutting power for three hours according to the schedule that they released earlier this week.
Power officials however were quick to blame it on the need to supply electricity to intermediate examinations centres and meet some “VIP requests”.
“The announcement said that the power cut timings in Sainikpuri will be from 6 am to 7.30 am and 12 to 1.30 pm but we had power cuts from 10 am on Saturday. In fact, every day there is a change in power cut timings,” complained K. Ramaiah, a local.
Citizens are further infuriated by the attitude of officials of the Central Discom who refuse to pay heed to complaints.
Residents in West Marredpally, Alwal and Mehdipatnam reiterated the same complaint.
“Not knowing the power cut timings causes severe difficulties in finishing household work apart from water problems. Yesterday, I almost fell off the treadmill as it suddenly came to a halt due to the power cut,” said a livid resident of West Marredpally, Anjali V.
The unscheduled power cuts have so infuriated people that in Nizamabad, farmers attacked the electricity sub-station near Nasrullabad crossroads.
Discoms try to reduce power cuts
The discoms are trying to work out a one-and-a-half hour power cut schedule.
“There have been fluctuations in timings as we started with a load relief of one hour, followed by two hours and are now working out a one-and-a-half hour schedule,” said CGM Metro Zone of Central discom, Satish Kumar.
“In the last two days, timings have stabilised in 99 per cent areas, but in the remaining areas it continues to be affected in the morning hours due to adjustment made for the intermediate examination. We have to also accommodate some important requests from pumping stations which have led to the confusion, but will stabilise completely. This is not a regular feature.”
