Prabhu Daya: HC orders Rs 25L relief
The Kerala High Court on Tuesday directed the owners of the Merchant Vessel Prabhu Daya to furnish a bank guarantee of Rs 25 lakh each towards the compensation claims made by relatives of three fishermen who drowned.
Justice Harun ul Rashid also directed the Deputy Conservator of the Chennai Port Trust to arrest and detain the vessel till the day the bank guarantee is furnished.
The court passed the order while considering the pleas of Justin’s wife Matilda and their children and his mother Mary, Cleatus’s wife Princy and their children and his mother Selin and Anna, wife of Jose.
The petitioners have sought a compensation of Rs 2 crore. Five fishermen were killed after the fishing boat they were sailing in was hit by Prabhu Daya, a merchant vessel.
The petitioners also sought a directive to register a case of crime against the captain of the ship and crew members Prashobh Sugathan and Mayur Virendraku- mar.
The petitioners asked the court to issue a directive to arrest and detain the vessel at Kochi port till the completion of the probe.
