Prabhunath vows to end Nitish rule
The JD(U)’s subaltern strongman and three-term MP, Prabhunath Singh, on Saturday joined the RJD along with two MLAs from Bihar’s leading ruling party in presence of RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav at a massive public meeting, hinting at a major shift in the state’s political landscape ahead of the Assembly polls.
The Rajendra Stadium in Chapra, Mr Yadav’s Lok Sabha constituency, witnessed history of sorts being made as Mr Singh and Mr Yadav embraced each other and eagerly sported their heads in a single, large garland, ending a political rivalry that kept them apart for nearly 20 years. Mr Singh, an upper-caste Rajput leader considered to have significant influence on upper-caste voters in four districts in western Bihar, vowed to end the JD(U)-BJP rule in the state with the Assembly polls, slated for November.
The RJD chief, hoping to snatch the votes of the Rajputs and other upper castes away from the ruling NDA and a resurgent Congress due to Mr Prabhunath’s defection, vowed to give 10 per cent reservation to the upper castes if his RJD-LJP alliance formed a government in Bihar. Mr Yadav also announced that an RJD-LJP government would convert the jobs of Bihar’s contractual schoolteachers, appointed during the NDA regime, into permanent government service.
