Pranab to give ‘last message’ today

Known for his razor-sharp intellect, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, a quintessential Congressman, is variously described as a walking encyclopaedia, chronicler of Congress history, expert in matters of the Constitution and governance and a stickler for rules in Parliament.

The Congress Working Committee met specially on Monday to bid Mr Mukherjee a warm farewell. Mr Digvijay Singh, Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, Ms Sushila Tiriya, Dr Karan Singh, Mr M.V. Rajasekharan and Mr
Shakeel Ahmed could not remain present.

The Congress has set up a coordination committee for the presidential election which will meet at the party’s “war room” at GRG road on Tuesday evening.

The committee consists of Mr Ahmed Patel, Mr A.K. Antony, Mr P. Chidambaram, Ms Ambika Soni, Mr Janardan Dwivedi, Mr Pawan Kumar Bansal, Mr Rajiv Shukla and Mr Paban Singh Ghatowar, besides Mr Mukherjee.

Mr Bansal, the parliamentary affairs minister, is coordinating Mr Mukherjee’s poll campaign, including the process of filing of nomination.

“Tomorrow I will give my last message,” said Mr Mukherjee, less than 24 hours before he resigns as the finance minister to contest the presidential poll.

Mr Mukherjee has always been obliging to mediapersons waiting for comments outside his North Block office on various issues plaguing the economy and sometimes on politics.

Rarely has the outgoing finance minister disappointed reporters by not offering comments. Even on Monday afternoon when reporters asked him about the proposed measures to boost the economy, a smiling Mr Mukherjee said, “I think notifications are going to be issued.”

He also fondly remembered his over 32-year long association with the Congress Working Committee. Returning from a special meeting of the CWC, Mr Mukherjee said, “Now I am giving farewell call.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
