Pranab’s big day today
President-elect Pranab Mukherjee will be sworn in as the 13th President at 11.30 am at a special ceremony on Wednesday in the Central Hall of Parliament.
Before taking oath, which will be administered by Chief Justice of India S.H. Kapadia, he will visit the Mahatma Gandhi Samadhi at Rajghat.
After Mr Mukherjee takes over, he will be given a 21-gun salute, address the gathering and then leave for Rashtrapati Bhavan with President Pratibha Patil. The new President will be given an inter-services guard of honour in the forecourt of the presidential palace.
Congress MLA Abhijit Mukherjee, son of President-elect Pranab Mukherjee, on Tuesday expressed his desire to contest from Jangipur lok Sabha constituency in Murshidabad district which was represented by his father.
Former Lok Sabha Speaker P.A. Sangma is toying with the idea of challenging Mr Mukherjee’s election in the Supreme Court. Though Mr Sangma had congratulated Mr Mukherjee, he had also said the option of approaching the Supreme Court against the election was open.
