Prasar Bharati moves HC over telecast rights
Prasar Bharati, the regulatory body of Doordarshan news channels and All India Radio (AIR), on Thursday approached the Delhi high court against 24 channels for telecasting the Commonwealth Games (CWG) footage without their prior permission and sought an injunction against any further telecast as they had the sole rights to telecast the sports biggest extravaganza.
The petition stated that the injunction was required to protect official broadcast rights of the CWG under the Copyright laws.
Doordarshan, the official broadcaster of the CWG, had filed an injunction suit in the high court against 24 channels and the Organising Committee of the CWG, cautioning them against the violation of Copyright Act.
Prasar Bharati, which has the exclusive broadcast rights of the CWG, had also issued a “Prohibition of Unauthorised Telecast of CWG 2010” notice to these 24 channels, reminding them that huge penalties would be imposed on them if their rights were violated.
The regulator has taken this preventive measure to ensure non-repetition of trespassing in its broadcasting rights and interests.
