Prez signs Prasar CEO B.S. Lalli’s suspension
President Pratibha Devisingh Patil signed the file recommending Mr Lalli’s suspension pending investigation late Tuesday evening, a day before she leaves for Hyderabad for her annual sojourn.
The action against Mr Lalli, a former Indian Administrative Service officer, comes only after the PMO stepped in. The Union information and broadcasting ministry had written to the PMO seeking Mr Lalli’s suspension, as reported first by this newspaper. The PMO, in turn, forwarded the request to the President who is empowered to do so under the Prasar Bharati Act.
Charged with irregularities in connection with the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Mr Lalli’s tenure has been mired in controversy. The action against him comes as the government would like to be seen as acting against corruption within the system.
Mr Lalli was indicted by the Central Vigilance Commission, which had accused him of breaching parliamentary privilege, giving undue favours to some broadcast firms and financial mismanagement.
