Prime Minister condoles Suchitra's death
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has condoled the passing away of legendary Rabindrasangeet exponent Suchitra Mitra and said that she made Tagore's treasures accessible to a wide audience.
"In the 150th birth anniversary year of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, the government will provide all support to sustaining his rich musical legacy, one of whose greatest exponents was Suchitra Mitra," he said in a condolence message.
Mr Singh said Mitra trained three generations of younger artists in Rabindrasangeet.
"She was perhaps the last in a legendary line of Rabindra Sangeet singers, who made Rabindranath Tagore's treasures accessible to a wide audience not only in Bengal but in the rest of the country and abroad".
Mitra (86) died at her South Kolkata residence on January three after protracted illness.
