Prisoners on rampage after inmate ends life in UP jail
Inmates at the Kannauj district jail went on the rampage over the alleged suicide of a prisoner after he was beaten by the jail staff on Thursday.
Angry inmates, armed with sticks and stones, began protesting since Wednesday night when Kamlesh, 51, committed suicide by hanging. He was reportedly harassed by the jail staff which drove him to take the drastic step. Several prisoners escaped from their cells and climbed on to the roof of the jail from where they pelted stones at the police.
Demanding the termination and arrest of the deputy jailer, the prisoners refused to come down from the roof and thwarted all attempts made by the police to control the situation.
Forces were called in from adjoining districts and a heavy deployment of police was made around the jail premises.
