Privilege motion in J&K house
CPI(M) state secretary Muhammad Yusuf Tarigami on Thursday moved a breach of privilege notice before the Speaker of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly after Independent MLA Eng. S.A. Rasheed alleged that he was beaten up by policemen when he visited a police station in frontier Kupwara district to file an FIR.
Mr Tarigami also demanded a magisterial inquiry into the incident while the MLA has returned his police security and escort vehicle in protest.
Mr Rasheed alleged he was severely beaten by Handwara police on Wednesday when he went to the local police station to lodge a complaint against unprovoked thrashing of a civilian by cops earlier. “Instead of listening to me, a dozen of policemen pounced on me and beat me up too. I was abused and threatened, so was my PSO,” he said.
Mr Tarigami said the thrashing and beating of an MLA is a “gruesome and shameful” act which should be immediately probed into. He added the incident is “disrespectful and humiliation to the institution of legislature as a peoples’ representative’s stature has to be respected and any contempt to it must be taken serious by the government.” He also met Speaker of the Assembly here and submitted a notice of breach of privilege against S.P. Handwara under Rule 238 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the House.
