Privilege move on PM today, says BJP
The BJP intends to move a privilege motion against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tues-day for allegedly misleading Parliament over the Wiki-Leaks expose on the July 2008 “cash-for-votes” issue, BJP national spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said Monday. Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj is likely to move the motion while in the Rajya Sabha Leader of the Opposition Arun Jaitley is likely to do so.
The BJP-led NDA will also demand a discussion in the Lok Sabha under Rule 193 (not entailing voting) in which Ms Swaraj, BJP leader Yashwant Sinha and the JD(U)’s Sharad Yadav will participate.
“Both the Leaders of the Opposition were not allowed to speak after the PM made his statement. Hence we are making the demand for a debate,” Mr Hussain said. While the discussion on the Finance Bill is scheduled in the Lok Sabha for Tuesday, the RS will take up a calling attention moti-on on nuclear safety in India in the wake of the recent disaster in Japan. On the WikiLeaks expose, the PM had last week hit back at the Oppos-ition for raising “old char-ges that have been debated, discussed and rejected by the people of India”. However, the BJP had said that the PM had misled Parliament and that it would move a privilege motion against him for saying that no bribe was paid to any MP. The party had alleged that the PM’s statement was contradictory to the findings of the parliamentary probe committee in the case.
The BJP had said that the PM and the UPA government were the “principal beneficiaries” of the cross-voting in the 2008 trust vote. However, this was dismissed by parliamentary affairs minister Pawan Kumar Bansal who had said that “no part of the (PM’s) statement is incorrect”.
