Prof. murder: former accused kills himself

Vimal Tomar, one of the former main accused in the Professor H.S. Sabharwal murder case, allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison, the police said on Sunday.
Tomar, who lived with a relative here, allegedly consumed some poisonous substance last night. He was rushed to the hospital, where he died on Sunday, the police said. The report of the autopsy is awaited.
Tomar and five other activists of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad had faced trial for allegedly manhandling Professor Sabharwal at Madhav College in Ujjain during the student elections. Sabharwal died following the assault. His death had led to widespread outrage. But all the six accused were later acquitted by a Nagpur court where the trial had been transferred on the direction of the Supreme Court.

Orissa suspends licences of 50 mining firms

The Orissa government has suspended licences of 50 mines owners for not furnishing complete reports on the exploitation of minerals by them in the last four years.
Besides, the government has also stopped mineral exploitation in three mines and served showcase notices to 10 other companies as to why their licenses would not be withdrawn.
According to sources in the state mines department, 222 companies were asked to furnish details about their mineral exploitation in the past four years.
While 172 companies furnished details, 50 of them are yet to respond to the order. Of the 50 companies, 31 are associated with iron ore 19 deal in manganese.
In yet another case, the government has asked the recovery of `217 crore from Gandhamardan Ispat Private Limited for over exploitation beyond the leased area.
