Proposal on info-sharing approved
The government on Thursday gave its nod to finance ministry proposals to ink agreements with Monaco, Jersey and Taipei (Taiwan) to ensure exchange of information on the tax matters and avoidance of double taxation.
Informing about the decision of the Union Cabinet, which was chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, sources said, “As the negotiations has been completed with Monaco, Jersey and Taipei (Taiwan) with respect to tax information exchange and avoidance of double taxation, it has been decided to let the finance ministry move ahead with its proposal to seal agreements with the identified countries.”
Now, since the formal nod has been given, the finance ministry will move ahead in consultation with home and law ministries in its efforts to finalise the agreement documents.

Chiru to take final call on Cong merger
Hyderabad, Feb. 3: The Praja Rajyam Party on Thursday said it has decided to “work together” with the Congress to achieve its objective of social justice and authorised party president K. Chiranjeevi to decide whether to merge the outfit with the Congress when he meets AICC chief Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi. “Since the PRP does not have the strength of its own to realise the objective of social justice and uplift of downtrodden, we have resolved to join hands with the Congress,” party political affairs committee member C. Ramachandraiah told reporters after a meeting of party MLAs and senior leaders here. —PTI

Cops told to finish DDU trust probe

Feb. 3: The high court has asked the police to complete the probe on the missing file of the alleged Deen Dayal Upadhyay Trust land scam. The court issued such directions while complainant Srikrishan Kukkar filed a petition saying the police was not doing anything. The court has given four months to the police for completing investigation.
According to the complaint, the previous BJP government had allotted a piece of land measuring 7,693 square metres.

New probe in ice-cream parlour case

Feb. 3: The Kerala government on Thursday deputed a special team led by the Crime Branch additional director-general of police, Mr Vinson M. Paul, to conduct a fresh probe into the ice-cream parlour sex scandal in the wake of the controversial disclosures that have come up regarding its investigation and trial.
The sex scandal, which haunted the Indian Union Muslim League leader, Mr P.K. Kunhalikutty, for years had come to the centrestage again last week with his brother-in-law and former aide K.A. Rauf confessing he had bribed judges.
