Puducherry L-G, PC meet in Hasan case
An embattled Iqbal Singh, the lieutenant governor of Puducherry who is being probed by the ED for having recommended the swift issuance of a passport to Hasan Ali, accused of stashing away huge amounts of black money abroad, met Union home minister P. Chidambaram yet again on Wednesday.
The 20-minute-long meeting at Mr Chidambaram’s North Block office came after two consecutive days of questioning that Mr Singh faced from ED officials. The questioning, which was conducted at the LG’s official residence in Puducherry, the Raj Niwas, concluded on Tuesday.
Asked if he would resign as LG, a visibly perturbed Iqbal Singh later told reporters: “I will not reply to any question.” Prior to this, he told reporters, “The ED has questioned me. The top court is monitoring the case.” Government sources said the Centre will wait for the ED probe to complete and any decision of his continuance in office depends of whether the agency can find “additional’’ evidence to establish his links with Hasan Ali Khan. The LG has already admitted that he wrote two letters, including a recommendation to allow Khan to travel abroad.
on humanitarian grounds.
On the reason behind meeting Mr Chidambaram for the third time in 10 days, Mr Singh had shot back saying, “I can meet the home minister any number of times, you cannot question me.”
