Pujari aide holds 2 women, shot dead

An alleged Ravi Pujari aide held a Chembur builder’s wife and maid captive for nearly two hours, before being shot dead by the police on Friday morning.
According to the Chembur police, Vijay Bhatija, who runs a construction business, was at home with his family when Pujari aide, Anand Dengre, reached his residence at Kaveri society in Chembur.

“Claiming he was a telephone company representative, Dengre went up to Mr Bhatija’s sixth floor flat and when Mr Bhatija’s maid opened the door, he whipped out a gun and bound her hands and legs with some clothes. On hearing her scream, Mr Bhatija rushed out with his wife. Dengre demanded him to pay Rs 25 lakhs, failing which he threatened to kill Prachi and the maid. When Mr Bhatija told him that he was unable to pay such a huge amount, Dengre pushed him out of the flat and locked the door from inside,” said an officer with the Chembur police station.
Mr Bhatija then called the police and informed them about the incident. Teams were immediately dispatched to the spot, and divisional combat vans as well as zonal Quick Response Teams were apprised of the situation.
Meanwhile, the police learnt that Dengre had called Mr Bhatija four months ago demanding Rs 25 lakhs from him then, the police said. The police, on reaching the spot, called up Mr Bhatija’s residence and negotiated with him for nearly 20-25 minutes. In response, he fired one round from inside the house.
With no other alternative, the police obtained a duplicate key from Mr Bhatija and a sub-inspector along with two constables entered the house.
Dengre saw them entering and fired one round in their direction. The policemen returned the fire, and Dengre was shot twice; once in the chest and once in the torso. He was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar, where he succumbed to his injuries.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
