Purohit claims torture by cops
Alleging brutal torture at the hands of the Maharashtra police, including “twisting of private parts”, Malegaon bomb blast case accused Lt. Col. Prasad Purohit on Tuesday petitioned the Armed Forces Tribunal seeking quashing of the Army’s court of inquiry in his case.
The petition came up for hearing before the tribunal on Tuesday morning. The court asked the Army for its reply on whether (the Army’s) department proceedings in the matter could continue when Lt. Col. Purohit is being tried under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).
The court posed a query to the counsel representing the Army as to whether parallel proceedings could continue. The Army is expected to soon file its reply to the query of the court.
According to the petition that has been signed by Aparna Purohit, wife of Lt. Col. Purohit, it has been mentioned that Lt. Col. Purohit is currently “detained at the Taloja Central Jail, Khargar, Mumbai”.

IAF detects fraud worth Rs 48 lakhs

Aug. 17: The Indian Air Force (IAF) on Tuesday announced detection of a case of “fraudulent withdrawal of public fund” to the tune of over Rs 48 lakhs “from a nationalised bank” operating the IAF’s public fund account which was detected by the Air Force Central Accounts Office (AFCAO). The IAF said an FIR had been filed with the Delhi police. The IAF has ordered an inquiry.
“The withdrawals were done using counterfeit cheques with forged signatures that were cleared by the bank. The IAF has instituted an inquiry into the case and has also filed an FIR with the civil police. The IAF has also ordered validation of all its public and non-public accounts held at all Air Force establishments,” the IAF stated.
The IAF did not name the concerned nationalised bank.
