Rahat will be allowed to leave after he pays penalty
Revenue intelligence officials will press charges against well-known Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and his manager Maroof for customs and foreign exchange violations after $124,000 was found on them at IGI Airport last Sunday. The two were again questioned briefly on Saturday.
The two had been detained for over 24 hours and intensively questioned, both at the airport and at the DRI headquarters in the city, before being released. Their passports had been seized and they were directed not to leave the country.
Sources said the DRI had completed its investigations and would now issue them notices to appear before the adjudicating authority: the customs commissioner (airports).
The sources said the duo would be allowed to leave the country after the adjudication proceedings are completed and after paying a heavy penalty.
“After completion of adjudication proceedings, the duo will be booked under Sections 77 and 113 of the Customs Act and penalty will be imposed,” the sources said.
The DRI is also in touch with the Enforcement Directorate to ascertain if the undeclared currency recovered from them amount to any possible violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act.
